butterfly blues

“hey, a pretty little butterfly,” a cute chubby girl about 5 exclaims, grinning excitedly from ear to ear at the sight of the pink and purple hued butterfly resting gently on the tip of the leaf. her stubby little fingers reach out to grasp it, just as it flitters out of her reach. “oh no, come back! i just want to see your colorful wings, won’t you come back?” she starts chasing it around, her pigtails blowing out behind her, while big dollops of tears start splashing down her cheeks.

in her attempts to chase that dainty butterfly, she had tripped over several uneven grounds, bruising her knees in the process and her elbows too-when she tried breaking her fall. her pretty white and yellow paisley printed dress was soon white and yellow no more, but brown, caked with mud. her shiny new black shoes were now dull and dirty. as she ran around looking determinedly for that butterfly, tired, wiping the sweat off her brow, streaking her face with mud while doing so.

she finally gave up and fell in a huff onto the ground, still sobbing. when all of a sudden she wiped her tears and had a sudden renewed determination, “i will find you one day pretty little butterfly! i know i will! not today perhaps, but another day.”

she left that day, putting the butterfly behind her.

a few years had passed since that quirky day. now as that same girl strolled through the same spot as she did few years back, a flurry of pink flitted past the corner of her eyes. “hey, a pretty little butterfly,” she exclaims, her eyes in search of it. could it be the same one? she thought. as soon as her eyes found its target, she zoomed in on it, and “Gotcha!”, she caught it in between her palms. happy that she could finally look at the butterfly which evaded her grasp years before, she peeked in to have a look “oh no! there’s nothing there, but i did catch it! i know i did!” she couldn’t take it anymore, she had to let go of this butterfly nonsense, she turned away dejectedly. but wait! she couldn’t believe her luck, to her surprise, the most beautiful butterfly landed on the tip of her nose, in all it pink and purple hues right in front of her eyes (literallly!).

there at that moment stood a girl of five, grinning from ear to ear despite her tears to have the butterfly she sought so hard for to have found her.

silly story…i was feeling blue…
